insurance policy maturing

What product is this??? I have friends that occassionally say "I have an insurance policty maturing" and then they "seemingly" get a load of cash.
What is it? A life policy? What are you insuring??? Is it an investment? Any help appreciated.
I could ask them of course, but don't want to look stupid.

What happened in the six minutes between making the effort to ask your question on this forum and then finding the answer yourself?:)
It could be a bond, as life insurers issue those too as a form of saving. Insurance policy because it's written by an insurer, and may offer particular guarantees (eg minimum surrender value or sum assured on death)0
