insurance policy maturing

What product is this??? I have friends that occassionally say "I have an insurance policty maturing" and then they "seemingly" get a load of cash.

What is it? A life policy? What are you insuring??? Is it an investment? Any help appreciated.

I could ask them of course, but don't want to look stupid.

i think its an endowment policy. Crisis over.

It could be a bond, as life insurers issue those too as a form of saving. Insurance policy because it's written by an insurer, and may offer particular guarantees (eg minimum surrender value or sum assured on death)
