What is they best way to ask for unpaid leave in writing?
Has anyone got any examples of what to write?

I think the most appropriate course of action would be to discuss with boss first.0

Check your company policy about it and then discuss with your manager first. They can guide you from there.ally.0

All that I've been told by management is that I should put my request in writing.0

If there's a policy, then it's worth knowing what it says. For example, if there's a policy which says after being there for five years you can have four weeks unpaid leave to do whatever you like, then great. If it says it's for particular purposes, then you need to refer to that.Signature removed for peace of mind0

If there is a policy it will likely have eligibility criteria and be discretionary. You will have to provide written notice (3 months) but be prepared for management declining your request due to business reasons.
You will likely be expected to keep in touch with your line manager to keep abreast of workplace developments.
Its not unusual for policy to allow for only one break during employment so tread carefully.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
Sabbatical is more of an American thing isn't it? With the aim of taking an unpaid career beak for approximately an year.
Obviously you will need to bring it up with your manager and discuss who is going to do your work load, and who will train your temporary replacement.
It may help your case if your sabbatical would gain you experience and skills relevant your job that your employer would benefit from.0 -

Not always. My company let's you take it but maximum of 6 months for instance.
It is however at manager's discretion and can be rejected.ally.0
