Cleaning wood varnished floors

I've just moved into my first house with the original floorboards exposed in the living room. I think they are stained and varnished.
The house is dirty and smells (needless to say I am very disappointed with my new purchase but I'll spare you the sob story!) and I want to give the floors a good clean. They've had a dog which probably accounts for the smell somewhat.
Can I use disinfectant (like Dettol) on the floors? I've read somewhere about vinegar but wouldn't that be harsh too? I've bought my first steam mop but kind of don't want to ruin it with the previous owners dirt just yet. I'd rather use an old mop, chuck it away and then use the steam cleaner next time.
The floor isn't in great condition so it's not the end of the world if I take a bit of the finish off...having said that, I'd rather not make a bad situation worse,,,:(

I just mop mine with flash liquid in hot water. Wring the mop out so its not too wet and leave the doors open so they dry quicker.0

I do mine with Flash too, a bit of Dettol will help with the dog smells.0

Didn't you notice the doggy smells before you bought it ?Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.
