Any advice as to the best place to buy specs.? My son who is about to begin his PGCE in September is looking to replace his specs as he has a new prescription. Where is the cheapest/best place to buy?

It's your sons eyes you are talking about here. Forget cheapness and look at who is best locally.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I agree it is my sons eyes we are considering and I would not wish to compromise his health. He usually wears contact lenses but at times wears glasses to give the eyes a rest. I was not suggesting cowboys but I am aware there are good services available for purchasing specs online and was hoping to get peoples opinion and advice. I appreciate your commentI USED TO BE INDECISIVE BUT NOW I'M NOT SO SURE!

I do a lot of online buying but Specs are not something I would consider online.
What about the measurements? Also, your son needs to see what they are like when he tests them to wear. That isnt possible online.
I'm asking a bit with interest as I am getting a new pair of glasses next week regardless of my eye test result and the thought of buying online didnt even come into it and I am having difficulty seeing any benefit with something like this. It will be interesting to see if someone has bought online and what they thought.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I am a huge speccie:o and understand how expensive glasses can be! i found www.sightstation.com really good. trendy frames start at as little as £20, plus £20 for lenses. you can even order them and try them for a week to see if you want them for £2.50, which seems quite good if your son isnt sure on styles. this is great if you know his prescription.
if you dont know his prescription, then specsavers is the best and charges £20 for an eyetest. if he has governement support for his education, for example towards his fees, he should be eligible for a discount and can fill out the correct from in the specsavers store.
hope this helps!

Providing you have a proper test and prescription there is nothing wrong with buying specs online in fact you can save a lot of cash.
Try http://www.glassesdirect.co.uk
There are many more decent online suppliers just do a www search.0 -
Thanks Guys for the advice, will look at these sites. He dies have his prescription and has regular check up for his contact lense fittings but glasses are so expensive on top of all this. He is about to be a cash strapped student again so every little helps and it looks like there are good savings to be made. Like the idea of trying them for a week. :beer:I USED TO BE INDECISIVE BUT NOW I'M NOT SO SURE!

im not sure about measurements to be honest, but i ordered a pair from the site and wore them a few times to see how they felt. There might be info on the site. Also, if you go into an opticians and ask very nicely, they often do little adjustments and stuff for free!Total debt 10/08/07- £5050
