  • But, what if asking is done in the form of 'you have to do this, you're the only one who can do it and it HAS to be done', and also comes with threats of official disciplinary if you try to refuse...?

I cannot believe people are expected to work 40 days a row or 80 hour weeks. What kind of jobs are these?

I used to be a nurse and worked 6 days in a row with 3 days off or 3 or 4 12 hour days a week and that was enough for me!

Send them a copy of the link on direct.gov website saying one day off in 7 or 2 in 14 and it's illegal to be asked to do it. You could do an intern and say you'll work 10 hour days to help out in the mean time if it means you'll get extra pay as then your still working the same op hours as the 7 day week but with a day off

Don't forget it is 24 hours rather than an actual day so if you have shifts thrown into the mix you may not get an actual day off but still meet the directive.

Ie finish work until 1pm on a Monday start work 1pm Tuesday gives you a 24 hour break from work without a day off

In some ways taking it that far can clarify the situation a disciplinary that the company openly admits it is breaking the law, get it in writing. An email with something like further to conversation on xx can you confirm that ....

Verbally you could point out that if you really are the only one they need to be nice to you.
