Always thought it was just us...

Since last week I always thought it was just myself and hubby who where in debt but thankfully paying as much as we can. Since then it seems both very close relatives of mine and a couple of close friends have pulled their head out of the sand and opened up. They are not aware of our situation as we are the kind that we don't want them to know about our business. I was in complete shock as to how much they are owing. They where very open about it. One relative to the point that she doesn't answer her telephone at all. They are having phone calls up until 8.30 in the evening.

Is anway finding they are also not alone when it comes to debt within their circle of friends and family?

A few of my friends are in debt, one to a large extent and ignoring it, one is happily paying her loan (she runs a business so it was essential) and I've just helped another deal with her OD. So out of 4 of us, 2 are actively trying to reduce our debt as quickly as possible.

    Not bad I guess.

  • Absolutely. A lot of my friends all have the latest make-up/clothes/bags etc and I used to feel a little envious, as I am trying so hard to clear my debt and therefore didn't buy myself such things. However, I have recently learnt that at least one of them is in serious debt because of it. Suddenly, shiny new things don't seem as attractive when you realise how long you will be paying for them.
I have offered to help and go through an SOA with them, but their light bulb hasn't come on yet, so I haven't pushed the matter. I will be there for her when it does though, and directing her to this wonderful board that has, quite frankly, altered my life. xx

When I was in work everyone was the same. Always buying things am sure they didn't need. Just for show. Some days I didn't take moneyto work as I took a packed lunch. Another thing there was always some sort of collection going round and I just didn't have the money, which I use to say I haven't got my purse. Think they got the message in the end. You can't say yes to everything.
