I won a phone, but now it's faulty. What can I do?

Hi,

I feel a bit cheeky asking this really! But a year ago I won a HTC phone on Twitter from a big UK company. It's been a great phone and I love it.

However, it has now developed a fault which is very annoying. All HTC phones come with 24 months warranty so it is still well within that. But as I didn't purchase the phone, does this still apply?

Can I get a repair done on the warranty? Do I approach HTC or the company I won it from?

Thanks for any info.

I would get in touch with HTC. They will be able to tell from the IMEI number of the handset if it is still under warranty and how to go about sending it in for repair. You can say that it was gift/competition prize if they ask where it was purchased from.

HTC were brilliant when I had an issue with my phone which o2 claimed was water damage and they wouldn't help even though I was on contact. If I remember right, HTC collected the phone, told me it wasn't water damage and I was right, fixed the phone at their factory and returned it to me for no charge, there was a form to fill out about the phone when they collected it but I can't remember if you had to be specific about the purchase details, I think it was more about the phone itself.

    Good luck :)

Just to add, I got in contact with HTC via phone, it was very quick and simple and they arranged the collection straight away, they did say if the fault was one I had caused like o2 said, there would be a charge for them having to come out and collect but I was pretty certain it was a particular fault caused by the software and it didn't come to that.

Well I just took a look at the warranty documents on their website and it states you need to submit proof of purchase. HOWEVER, it might be worth you phoning their support number. Explain what the situation is, they might have had this sort of thing happen before (imagine the amount of phones won every year, it must a be a lot).
Do you have a contact email for the company you won it from? They might provide a statement from you for HTC if needed, to say they gifted it to you.
But your first port of call should definitely be calling HTC. The number is ‎0845 890 0079 but from the looks of their support website you can chat online to them too. Just googled 'HTC support uk' and it should be the first result.
Let us know how you get on, I'm intrigued as I won a phone this year too.

Edit: You can't chat online it seems it is just an email but that's better than nothing if you like me hate calling people! :)
  • Hia, I had a similar issue with a phone that I won off Capital Radio a couple of years ago. Sony wouldnt take the phone under warranty as I had no proof of purchase, so I got in touch with Capital and returned the phone to them. They then liased with Sony and I was sent a new phone within 7 days xx

I had a similar issue with a Samsung washing machine which stopped working 2 years and a couple of weeks after I won it. I didn't have a delivery note or any proof of purchase and was having difficulty getting Samsung's customer services to do anything. The thing that eventually convinced them was copies of the emails from the company which ran the comp showing which showed when it was delivered give or take a couple of days.

Moral of the story: for any prize, keep the emails and delivery note, just in case you need them!
