Online grocery shopping advice...

I'm seriously considering having my groceries (mainly bulk stuff not fruit/veg/meat etc) delivered but I was wondering....
Being completely agnostic when it comes to supermarkets I just buy from whoever is the cheapest. Is joining ALL of the supermarket delivery services likely to be cost effective/possible once delivery is factored in?. I'd also probably only shop about once a month.

Are you really single? If so, how much basic shopping do you really need to make a delivery worthwhile?0

I'm happy to do most of my shopping for things like meat, veg, fruit bread cheese etc at various markets and artisan shops but I tend to bulk buy lots of staples when they are on special offer. Living on the top floor of my apartment building this can be a pain.
Currently L'oreal Deodorant is half price so bought 10.
Amira Basmati rice is £8.50 for 10kg when its normally £4.80/kg so got a sack
Parmentier Sardines were a £1 each recently so bought 20 tins.
or De Ceeco pasta at £2/kg
Its a way of getting top notch quality for not much more than average quality prices and as its staples they last forever.0 -
Only Tesco and Ocado happily deliver to flats anymore. ASDA and Sainsburys only deliver to the front of the block - although some drivers might still offer to carry it up, but the terms and conditions consider the communal door the point of delivery.0

Ah... Understand completely now and am not unsympathetic, having not had to buy loo paper for two years.
However you obviously don't have the normal storage constraints. And 20 tins of sardines (and I do like Parmentier) would probably take me seven years to get through. Too long. And de Cecco is regularly on special offer in Sainsburys so no need to stock up.
I think you might actually miss going to shop, seeing what's new and so on. And whilst I think buying meat and fish is better in butchers and fishmongers, local green grocers are not a patch on supermarkets in either quality or range.0 -
Try mysupermarket.co.uk

Personally I don't agree with this, the greengrocer in our local indoor market has fruit & veg of a far higher quality than I can get in supermarkets. My experience is that supermarket produce is chilled to the bone, and goes from unripe to over-ripe in 24 hrs. The same bought from the greengrocer is good all week.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

You must treasure your greengrocer then. I used to have a reliable one near where I live but after he retired, the shop became a restaurant. We do have a few stalls locally but the produce is not of a good standard and I won't give the my custom anyway as they are quite openly sexist, racist and homophobic.0

In terms of space I'm rattling around this place so finding storage isn't a problem. I also prefer to bulk buy once rather than have to go multiple times. Your right I love food shopping just not the sort that involves supermarkets and buying washing powder, toilet rolls etc. In terms of markets I can normally be found a couple of times a month at Billingsgate for fish, Smithfield less and less as I'm eating less meat so prefer to jump on to a Eurostar to Lille and use the french artisan butchers especially for whole (head feet and all) locally raised chicken. As for a green grocer its hard to beat the fantastic quality and high turn over of Yasar Halim on Green Lanes, London N4. Also Dalston and Walthamstow markets aren't bad. Being single its hard to get through too much cheese but get most from France due to quality and cost but cheddars etc from Neils Yard. Coffee from Monmouth and bread from Whole Foods Market as they'll do me a batch how I like it... "bien cuit" or St. Johns if I'm feeling extravagant. 3 or 4 times a year I'll travel further a field i.e. Spain, italy and stock up on local delicacies i.e a huge chunk of Parmigiano-Reggiano DOP, Olive Oil, Iberico Ham etc
Food is one of lifes true pleasures!0 -
Somehow I very much doubt that your food purchasing habits come anywhere near the heading 'money saving'.0
-
I disagree.
Buying in bulk when things are on offer not only ensures a good supply and a low risk of running out, it saves money!
I only buy particular brand name toiletries but never ever pay full price
You don't have to live on Tesco value baked beans to be considered "money saving".0
