Tax Code Woe

Hi All,

Am I going nuts.

Very briefly I finished my employment with my previous employment on 22 April 2015. The accounts person was unable to input the 1060L tax code onto my P45 and entered it via hand (she said there was a glitch in the system but this should be Ok).

My P60 also stated that my final tax code is 1000L.

Started new employment and they added the 1060L code.

Today I get two letters from HMRC stating that my new tax code with my new employer has now been changed to 642L and in that envelope there was a second letter stating that my tax code for the employer that I have left is BR.

In my new job I am on 40K and have no additional benefits like a company car, nothing.

I am completely confused. Something isn't right and I'm not brainy enough to work it out.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Do either of the letters give any indication of how HMRC have arrived at these codes ? (if they're coding notices, they would normally show the calculations on the back)

Sounds like HMRC thinks you have 2 employers
They do this a lot. The last twice I've changed employers this has happened to me, despite P45 being issued and handed to the new employer. You need to call them up and get them to realise that you only work for a single employer.
