Dodgy fuel selling..BBC report

Know where/who your buying it from and i dont see any harm it should do to your car. Why not fill a see through bottle first?
Ive run ribena coloured stuff through a brand new Clio Dci for 25k miles without problem. In fact i really dont see the point of driving a diesel unless you use the cheaper variants. Petrol cars are much nicer to drive although they are a pain to sell on again in N. Ireland.
I do however know that there are cars out there that will not run it and ive seen manys a banjo'd fuel pump to prove it. Ive also seen a friends car have a pump failure even though he used Sainsburys diesel all the cars life.
At the end of the day i would well believe it is even far more than the reported findings for contaminated fuel in petrol stations. I wouldn't buy white diesel anywhere along the border as chances are its full of acid and what ever other ingrediants they can find to make it clear.
Can you even trust the main manufacturers of fuel anymore too? Look what happend in england last year.:: No Links in signatures please - Edited by Forum Manager ::0 -
Most of the problem is cheaply built modern cars.
Sorry, no. Most of the problem is running something through your car when you have no idea what it is. 'Honest John' down the road may be selling you diesel he has got from across the border but more often than not it may have acids in it to burn out the 'red' part of the red diesel or the 'green' part of the green diesel, or it may be part home heating oil, or part something else that you dont know about.
I could list you off 20+ examples of cars i have seen through the trade that werent running properly, where their history could be traced back to diesel from 'unreputable' sources.
Chances are you *may* get away with it, but theres a real risk you wont - it could be a new fuel pump, it could be burnt out injectors.0 -

Problem is you cant *guarantee* what process the fuel went through to get to that wee pump in someones back yard down the road. Plus no amount of looking at it will tell you if its got acid in it, or paint thinners, or home heating oil.
On the *red* front, yes, chances are if you're running on red then you will be fine, more lubricants in it, heavier oil. You might go through the odd filter extra and that should be about it. If its worth running the risk of getting your car impounded and a £500 fine to you then great.
What happened in england was genuinely accidental and tescos / sainsburys paid for the repairs. I cant see some unbranded filling station forking out £1000 for a new fuel pump when that cheap diesel they got delivered in an unmarked lorry 'no questions asked' and then flog it for 5p a litre less burns out the pump....0 -
Just to add, my father in law is a taxi driver and he swears by BP ultimate diesel (or whatever its called) yes its more expensive. But he says he gets better mileage and the car runs better.
(his last car at nearly 500,000 miles on it)0 -
