HGV Job where you pay them to pass your test first?

Hi.
A friend of mine mentioned to me that he may be applying for a HGV job that was advertised but that part of the deal was that he would have to pay them to take his HGV test (More of a week-long course, from what I remember) but he doesn't know how much this will cost him.
Please can I ask if anyone has come across anything like this before? It just sounds mildly suspicious and I'd like to know if there are any negatives so I can keep him updated.
Thank you in advance.

Sounds more likely to be a Driver CPC that he needs to obtain in order to drive anything of, and over, 7.5 Tonnes.
This is actually a rusebeing used by a growing number of hauliers. It saves them £500 per driver.
If your friend is on benefits, he can tell the Job centre that he has an offer of work, but the job requires him to have a Driver CPC or they won't employ him. The JC+ might well pay for the course, or arrange it through their own training provider as it will mean that there will be one less benefits claimant to account for.
I have known of a few firms who have got shot of their drivers, then offered the job to anyone with a D-CPC as they are not willing to pay for it themselves.
This will only get worse when the limit for D-CPC drops to cover any vehicle of 3.5 Tonnes or higher later this year.Never Knowingly Understood.
