Can we get a mortgage with one default?

Maybe a bit previous but thought I'd ask.
Me and my partner live in a flat that I own (with a mortgage).
It is all in my name as I purchased it before I met him
We would like to move from the flat to a house that we would own together, so would apply for a joint mortgage.
The problem is that he has 1 default with Halifax, default date August 2011.
We have a big deposit to put down, good salaries, so the default is our 1 problem
Would we have to wait until August 2017 for the default to disappear? Or if we found a house next year could we still apply?

You'll probably find a home for it and the rate will depend on loan to value, the value of the default and if it is satisfied.
