Renting

I'm probably going to move out before my house sells. All the places I've seen on right move require approx £1800 deposit.
Do you usually have to pay a months rent in advance too?

It's common to require a deposit - after all, if you were to trash the place then disappear, the landlord at least has some money to pay for the repairs.

A landlord can ask for whatever they want in terms of a deposit, however it's slightly unusual to ask for a deposit and a months rent in advance - it's usually one or the other. But the landlord is at liberty to ask for whatever he wants - if his requirements put people off renting from him, that's his loss :-)

Whatever, make sure that any deposit is protected by a deposit protection scheme :

This ensures that you will get your deposit back as long as you comply with your side of the terms & conditions. The landlord cannot withhold your deposit without good reason.

I rent and at the start of each new tenancy I've paid a deposit (equivalent to 1 months rent or 6 weeks rent, it varies) and 1 months rent as rent is paid in advance not in arrears.

A deposit of £1800 seems high. Where are you looking and what size of property?

£1800 doesn't seem at all high to me sadly. They often charge a deposit equal to 6 weeks rent.
