    Unions can be effective for issues other than the two year rule. You say that your partner is a Support Worker and works 'on the front line'. By this, I assume you mean that he works directly with clients. Please ask him to consider union membership. Imagine if a false allegation was made about him, by one of his clients or their family. He would appreciate union support then. It's worth the cost even if you only use it as a type of insurance - there just in case you need it.


    My daughter is a support worker for the elderly, although previously she was in the community with elderly people, disabled children, and adults with learning disabilities. I asked (a few years ago) on MSE about union membership for her. As a result of that query, she joined Unison, who have a sliding scale of fees based on income. She has never used her union in the five and a half years that she has been working, but they are there is she needs them.
