I think you're talking of a NOW TV box.
They're fine - cost about £20 now and come with free month or more of entertainment or movies. You can add more at a lesser cost later. Use TCB or Quidco to get for less. You can get top-ups under another email address using other email address on TCB I've found.

We signed up when we came to the end of our Sky contract as I thought we'd do better if we were without Sky for a month or two.
Used it for 3 weeks (was a bit of a pain as we only have one HDMI port on our TV) and then tried phoning Sky. I had been offered 65% off the family package when I phoned to cancel BUT as we'd had about 2 years of totally FREE everything and then paid for a year at £8pm for family, HD & box-sets with a new HD+ box, I got greedy.:o

3 weeks after Sky was turned off, after using Now TV box, I rang up when I saw people were getting 60% off and up to £120 credit.
I got a result as we got £115 cashback & 60%+ off so the next year taking this into account we're only paying around £4.50 a month for 12m of Family, HD & Boxsets.

It's well worth while trying this as you get Sky1, Atlantic, Fox and quite a few more + there are box-sets on there too. Hopefully as soon as your Sky contract runs out they will offer you 50% online to come back. However, this just isn't good enough!:D Be without Sky for a month or so and you should get some very good offers. There is a LONG thread on here that says what people have been offered. Aim for a high offer.

I'm sure it costs Sky nothing to offer you a tremendous package - all they have to do is flick a switch or turn on. When we were 1st offered totally FREE Sky for a year (the whole lot including Sports & Movies) the nice young lady told me they needed to up their viewers to get more revenue in from advertisers, which was why they were offering us this free.

Always be VERY, very nice to all Sky callers, except the numpties that claim to be from Sky that want you to insure the box! Just say you just can't afford it.

Go to Now TV website and see what you can get BUT 1st look on HUKD to see what deals are available & go through TCB or Quidco OR a box might be available Monday on T's double up?

It's well worth while everyone cancelling Sky 31 days before end of contract, using Now TV for a few weeks every year after your contract is up & then trying for a brilliant deal on Sky. Don't forget that you can also catch up/download up to a month of missed programs normally so you won't miss much.

Thank you very much for your comprehensive post. We are just coming out of or contract from last year when I managed to get £30 of a month but only after we actually cancelled but that meant no internet for 1 month.

I am now looking at changing who provides our phone and internet so that we don't feel held to ransom by sky. Internet is such a necessity with my university work and the children being at secondary school that I really can't get it cut off again.

I have saved your post so that I can refer back to it once I have sorted out the phone.
    Thanks again :D

Or one of those android boxes that you can get for about £60 with Roku on. I use an apple TV for the same thing, and find it okay. Someone else has the android box with the full set up, and finds it great.

    Thank you,
I think it one of those android boxes, I think you get the channels over the internet.
My DH has been looking but we don't want to shell out £60-£100 if it doesn't actually do what it says it does and also as we don't know what they are called we are not sure we are looking at the best deals.
