    I'll swap you 50,000 black food trays for 50,000 yoghurt pots. Meet me on the border.

    Well it looks like you all get a far better service than us!
    Box 1 (usually green)
    Paper - newspapers, magazines, directories,
    leaflets, white envelopes and other paper.
    Glass bottles and jars - rinsed, not broken;
    no table or cook ware.
    Foil - bagged; aluminium foil only – check with scrunch test:
    squeeze and if it stays scrunched, it can be recycled.
    Box 2 (usually black)
    Food and drink cans - rinsed, and squashed
    with tops and steel jar lids inside if possible.
    Aerosols - only when empty; do not pierce or
    squash; remove plastic tops.
    Plastic bottles - no tops, please rinse; bottles
    only - no pots, tubs, trays or film.

    Cardboard - brown corrugated, grey card, greetings cards and
    brown envelopes; small bits of card can be put in larger boxes;
    please flatten; take large quantities to recycling site.

    Plastic bottles are all we are allowed to put in, no other plastic at all!

    Shocking! :eek:

    Why only plastic bottles?
    Somerset Waste Partnership collections at the kerbside and recycling sites only accept plastic bottles for recycling, but not pots, tubs, trays or film, as end-use markets for these are limited. Only put plastic bottles out for our collections and please remove bottle tops.

    Why not other types of plastics?

    The reason we only collect plastic bottles is that most UK reprocessors are currently only able to sort and supply plastic bottles to manufacturers for recycling and, more importantly, end-user markets for these other types of plastics are limited. The market situation may be slowly changing and a few plastic sorters are accepting other types of household plastic, but most UK reprocessors are still only able to recycle plastic bottles. In June 2013, it was announced one of the UK’s largest sorters had stopped accepting mixed plastics because it was not viable due to the poor quality of the material supplied and lack of end-markets.

    Some local authorities collect plastic pots, tubs and trays and most send these abroad for recycling. Whilst not necessarily a problem in itself, overseas plastics markets can be volatile as was demonstrated in October 2012, when Malaysia, Vietnam, China and the United Arab Emirates banned certain imports of waste including plastics. In 2013, China introduced even stricter import controls on the quality of plastics waste entering the country, which may have an effect on UK collections.

    Somerset Waste Partnership wants to be sure that if we add other plastics, such as pots, tubs and trays, to our collections, there are secure end-use markets available for them, preferably in the UK, and that we can be certain that they will be recycled. We continue to keep this situation under review, but, until the end-use market situation improves, we are following industry advice to focus on collecting plastic bottles, which have stable and secure end-uses in the UK.
    So they want to make certain that the items will definitely be recycled, but until they can be certain, they are happy to just sling them in landfill!

    Makes perfect sense to me! :rotfl:

    I don't understand why they can't take them to neighbouring North Somerset (my council) for processing? Bonkers country we live in now. Absolutely crazy!
