Contesting a valuation

Has anyone successfully contested a valuation? We had our valuation (borrowing more) on Wednesday, the surveyor was there for a total of 15 minutes, appeared more than a little disinterested and then came back with a price exactly the same as the House Prices Index valuation. There are comparable properties sold within the area for much more but is the process worth it? Is it ever successful? and how wide an area can be taken into account - is a 1 mile radius too far?
