I work in Occ Health. It really depends on the situation - if the employee is on long-term sick leave it may be more appropriate to see them at home. If they are able to get to work we might see them there. Sometimes our initial consultation is just a phone call (we have sites all over the country and only a few nurses so we can't travel to all of them easily).

Our initial meeting would be without HR. Although we could also organise a case conference with employee, line manager, HR or other appropriate people if relevant.

I had been sick for 4 weeks with neck and lower back pain following a major car accident I then went back to work at the end of the fourth week for my night shift I worked for about 4 hours and started getting lower back pain I explained to my manager and said I want to go home and he said you should do. I now have gone back to the GP and he has given me another weeks sick note.

I was reading through my staff hand book and it says in there that any absence over 4 weeks will be passed onto the Occupational Health so would my employer tell me if they are going to do it or not?

They should do, ideally they should speak to you before a referral to make sure you understand the reasons for the referral. In my experience some managers are a lot better at that bit than others!

    Nothing to worry about though.
