Out of curiosity........

I just wondered how many of you going through BR right now have been allowed to keep their cars...........and why they were allowed. .... I know Im being really nosy and you obviously dont have to answer but I ask because my OH is so very worried that they will take ours away.

Has anyone kept their car where no IPA/IPO has been imposed?
Our car is not worth much well under £500 i would say, but after all our rent, council tax and utilities and shopping are paid, we are left around £6 per month, thats without any money for extras like emergencies and hairdressers(which we all need) etc In our case would they take the car to free up the money used for car insurance/tax/petrol etc..

Its making my OH hold back from making an appointment with the court and its adding to the stress of things.

If our car is taken, does that mean , within the terms of the BR that we (or he) will not be able to own another car whilst undischarged or within an IPA/IPO period?( NOt that we would be able to afford one then I know )
Would it cut any leaway with the OR if my OH was still looking to improve his employment, hes not happy in his work and is looking for a better paid job, there really are no good employment opportunities here locally and need to be able to get further afield.

Also would unsociable hours count as there are no buses running on his shift pattern? And he has no other way to get to work. Would they check this is the case with employer etc?

Sorry I know I keep bleating on about this dam car of ours, but its the first one we have ever had!

Thanks again

    Good morning Scaredwitless32,
Quick run down 2 adults + 2child with 1 car only one driver.Car value 500.00
Both adults work but live in area without bus routs so no car no work,
Shops 3 miles away doctor same, hospital visits on regular basis ,children require transport also from a-b.
We were allowed to keep car.
I dont know all your details but if you can show that without the car it would cause undue hardship as above, but be honest. That and the value value should be a good indication to OR that you should keep it.
Also they seem intrested more in 2 or more car ownership and if car is worth more (than our old banger) as they remove expensive one and give a small amount back to get a more reasonable car (like ours).
    Hope this helps a little.

Just explain to the OR just what you've explained to us. You need the car for work and because of shift patterns and no public transport it would cause hardship if you disn't have the car. There you go car kept, no problem. They usually aren't interested in a car of such low value anyway as it would not get much at auction and wouldn't pay off much of your debts.

    Hi,

I was allowed to keep my car as i needed it for commuting.

It is a 12 year old volvo with 160k on the clock.

I did have to prove, verbably, in the OR interview that it was more cost effective to commute via car that getting a BUS-TRAIN-TAXI to work and TAXI-TRAIN-BUS home.

  • Thanks for that.
Well we live in town, on a regular bus route, my children are in their teens, and OH could get to work by bicycle if push comes to shove.......he doesnt work a regular unsociable hours, just as and when needed thats why i asked if they would check, we dont really have money left over to pay into an IPA as I see it, but that doesnt mean that the OR will see the same, and would probable want to free the money used for the car so that we could?!

Strange isnt it, we quite willingly sign ourselves up for years on end to borrow money BUT cant quite sign something that threatens a really cheap banger!! (for hopefully a shorter period of time) Feel like Im banging my head against the wall.

Scaredwitless from what iv seen said before on other postings a low value car seems more bother than its worth to the OR.
You live in a town ok but I bet you still have to ensure your teen children get to and from a to b safety some towns are not very safe;) .Public transport costs for 4 of you would come to more than cost of running the car.Especialy if you need to do your elderly mothers/auntys shoping or visit her in hospital;)
