Rates on a garage in NI?

Does anyone know if the rates you pay for a garage in NI are the same per square foot as the actual dwelling? The reason is we are buying a house and want to build a garage and I would like a rough idea of how much our rates bill would increase by?
Also does anyone know if you have to pay rates on the garage if it has a tin roof or does it have to be that prefab type shed/garage to be rates exempt? Thanks

I don't think the rates are based on the sq foot but are based on the value of the house .
If you look at two similar size houses in different areas of any town they will have different rates even if they are the same size.

Have any of your neighbours got a garage that you can use as a comparable .

You pay rates on total footage of all buildings on your property deemed to be permanent - and that included garages

Don't pay it for car ports though

Next door to us have a garage and the capital value for their property is £5000 more than us, we just use our driveway!

If the property is already built and on a street with other properties of similar size and finish (if it's in a development for example) you should check the Domestic Valuation List to find the capital value of your house and that of a similar property on the street with a garage.

Like Eclipser, our neighbour has built a garage, which has increased the capital valuation of their property by £5K. This means they pay an extra £30 per year (We're in the Lisburn & Castlereagh district council area) More info on rates on this website
