We have had the same meter since we lived here, which is way over 10 years, closer to 20! It's a spinning one.
Yes, I guess if a position is advertised a lot, it means it's not easy to recruit and/or lots of people drop out.
I've spoken to two readers, one recently who said he loved his job, and one about 10 years ago who had a company van (acuread it may have been) who said they treated him badly and even phoned him when he was going on holiday (enroute to airport) to say cancel as he was needed!!

Funnily enough, I just saw a job advertised for a meter engineer it says:

    · The government has announced a national roll-out of smart meters.
    · Every home in the UK over the next 5-7 years will have a smart meter installed.

So it does look like I wouldn't have the job for long.

You've got no chance of earning anything other than your hourly wage.I did this job for 2 years +& when i first started you were paid a bonus only after you had read 800 meters, after that you got paid 40p per reading.I only ever earnt any bonus once & and that was because i was on holiday Mon-Wed when i automatically got the 160 per day for these 3 days then on the thursday & friday i was fortunate enough to have several hunderd meters in cupboard in some flats where it was easy to get the required numbers.
I packed it in because the managers were always on your back+it was split shifts ie:work fom 8am-11am then go back and work till 4pm-8pm.

That doesn't sound like much fun Kevin. Perhaps it really depends on who you work for? Can I asked which company you worked for? (PM if you prefer), so I can avoid them!

That makes sense. The person I spoke to years ago, who hated his job was working for them.
    thanks
