I make my own soups and have a few family favourites under my belt.

Yorkshirelass, Mortgagefreeinthree, has a great recipe for 30 minute rolls which work really well, soft rolls and really tasty.

Got to second the convent garden soup books. I had a different one then mentioned but it's the same company who's soups tickled my tastes buds

I hate veg - seriously not fussed and to me veg is only peas carrots and sweet corn. With out the soup I'd be suffering rickets by now lol

Just thought I'd mention, talking to a local dairy farmer last night, my local dairy is being swallowed by one of the big chains :( means I can no longer feel smug about only eating/ drinking local dairy produce :(

Going to have to look into this further

Oh no Suki, that's rubbish. I'm going to have to travel a good half an hour 40 minutes to get to my 'local one'. It's such a shame isn't it.

Loving the soup talk, I've made soup for years, spicy parsnip is my favourite, even OH eats it, and he doesn't like parsnips! I have 3 Covent garden books, they are good, although more often than not I end up just shoving everything into a pan and hoping for the best.

Butterfly, you truly are an inspiration

What do you mean when you say you foil your raised beds?

We are on the NE corner of NI and our weather is usually dire. Cos we have the glens one side and the sperrins the other we are in a constant wind tunnel, serious winds, sometimes it's a battle to get the doors open. We are struggling to get decent crops. We do get some, but no where near enough to have enough to store for the year. We have one bed turned over to spuds( knocked back by frost ) and another with onions, carrots, parsnips and leeks and beets. Have also put in broad beans and cabbages ( both survived the frost) and have lettuce under a cloche Inside the " greenhouse" we have tomatoes and courgettes. However the toms are still only inches high and the courgettes we had to buy in as none of our seeds germinated. We will be adding Brussels, winter cabbage and more onions later in the year. Also have pots of herbs dotted about. And my rhubarb is only about 6 inches high still and not that pink :(

Seems we are at least a month behind the rest of the country and then winter comes early to us, not unusual for us to have snow from November to April up here

But I wouldn't move for all the tea in china :)

    So any tips and advice?

Think it must have been a duff year for courgette seed germination.

None of mine came up. Had to buy 3 plants from B & Q which I planted out yesterday and even one of those doesnt look too healthy.

Courgettes are one of the things I usually have good results from.

Ooh 2 of my courgette seeds have popped up above the surface!!! Not sure if I'll be able to keep them alive, as it's so late in the year. But it's something!

Wow Suki, sounds like you're up against it! Good luck.

I was also wondering about the foil-ing of raised beds. Details please:)

PS; I'm wondering if you have a blog Butterfly? If so, could you send me a PM with a link to it please. Ta.
