Received Tesco Clubcard vouchers for someone else

I received £32 worth of Tesco clubcard vouchers last week. However they were for the previous occupant of my house who I have never met (she left about three months before I bought the house in July 2014).

I returned them to Tesco at the counter on Saturday. The till operator said: "there is a first time for everything. Anyone else would of spent them". She then ripped them up.

I did not think anything about it at the time. However, looking back it appears that I am being penalized for being honest! Surely you would only be able to spend them if you scan your clubcard and it is the right clubcard?

    How are you being penalized?

What sort of vouchers were they? That is were cash quarterly vouchers ( the May ones won't be out for about another two weeks), or are they conditional spend vouchers?

The store can refuse, without the right Clubcard, which can be embarrassing if you don't have any other money - it happens!

Give, Clubcard a call quote your postcode and the other surname, there may still have the old address, or it may be GHS - it can be frozen pending another card from the other person.

  • You did the right thing - they can still access their vouchers online though so would still be able to spend them themselves!

Well, I have received another set of vouchers for the previous owner today.

I have done one of the following each time I have received them in the past:

    1) Handed them back to the Tesco store
    2) Returned to Sender

I even called Tesco once and asked them to remove the address details linked to this person. I am tempted to spend them this time. They are:

    1) £3 to spend in store on anything (Clubcard boost applies).
    2) xp off biscuits, fruits etc
    3) £5 off when you spend £40 or more

Would you spend them or just give them back?

The employee behind the customer service desk once said to me: "I would of spent them if I was you".

    I would advise:
    - Option 3 - call Tesco Clubcard, tell them you have had mail for the previous occupant, give them your postcode and the other person's surname.
They can do a search, you may need to confirm your surname and house number, having found the offending account they can take steps to ensure you won't get any more mail - with the wrong name on.

Do you think I should use the ones' I have?

I have already tried calling. I believe I may of called twice, but at least once.

I would spend them if they are targeted offer vouchers so 2 & 3 definitely. They are just marketing by Tesco.

I'm not sure about the first though, if it is a voucher someone has earned with their points then it's the same as stealing their money so no I wouldn't spend.
