How long do debt last for?

I have about four 300 - 500 pound debts that have all gone to debt colletion agencies.

My credit rating is totally screwed so is there any point paying these people.

Is there an amount of time that can pass when they will give up? I have moved a few times and lost all contact with three of these debts, but one I got in touch with about two years ago by mistake, is sending me a letter a week. These letters threaten legal action, people coming round etc..

Will these debts ever vanish, i.e. have a mobile phone bill which I have heard nothing from for over 10 years! Is it still waiting to be payed.
