Office 2007 Enterprise.......Got it free years ago and have put it on every PC since......Nothing it can't do that I need, so no reason to get anything else.
If I was forced to move away from it I'd go for WPS free.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

It all depends which advanced features you want to make use of. For most people it doesn't matter in the slightest which version it is.0

Early versions of Word do the job if all you wish to do is type a simple document (and, of course, so will the free versions). If you want to use it not only on your computer but also perhaps a tablet and/or a phone then modern versions link up and work better especially if you keep documents in the cloud. Can you do all this with older and/or free versions? Yes I think so for the most part but if you work for a firm which has a licence and will allow you to get it for under a tenner or are a student then it seems to me to be a no brainer.
If you want to keep Office 2000 and use Windows XP because you don't need to update then fine but I think its a bit short sighted.0 -

As it happens, am using Office 2016 Preview on Windows 10 Preview to be at the cutting edge.
I've got my MSDN subscription that gives me fun, wide ranging access to the MS back catelogue. I'm tempted to download Windows 3.1 and run Wordperfect in a VM0 -

2003 or 2007.
Why pay silly money for the emperor's new clothes?
I see nothing in office 2010/2015 that I can't do in office 2003.
And docs just seems to take up more space.0 -

The docx format takes up less space. You can test that by saving a file in doc and then docx format if you have the right version. By all means use whatever is your preference but at least check your facts before mouthing inaccuracies.
Something you can do in 2013 that you can't in 2003 is edit a pdf. The ability to crop pictures has improved. Onedrive is integrated into the package. You can use it with a touch screen. There are loads more and all of the aforementioned may be of no use/interest to you. As remarked earlier you can get it cheaply if your firm has a licence for individual use or you are a student so £9 is hardly "silly money"
This is probably the point where you accuse me of working for Microsoft!0
