Working without a contract after temporary contract end?

So I work in a large supermarket chain while studying and thought it was a good/simple job so recommended to OHs brother as a first job. He was hired by our rivals at the start of the year on a temporary 12 week contract. However after receiving the letter he asked if he could start a week later (as the first week was his birthday) and they were ok with that. The supermarket was in a rough area but he gets dropped and collected and all seemed friendly so thought it was a good job.

So now it's 14 weeks after original job start date offer and 13 weeks after starting and they won't let him know whether they're going to keep him on or not. He's on the schedule for the next 4 weeks but the managers seem to be playing good cop bad cop with him one saying they want to keep him on and the other saying they don't think they can, yet he's on the rota and when asked what his last day was they wouldn't say.

Can he now be let go with no notice because he's 1 week out of the temporary contract?

No, as he has more than four weeks continuous employment they would have to give him a week's notice (or pay in lieu).

However, if he is on a "zero hour" contract that would be largely meaningless as they could just offer him no work during the notice period.

A weeks notice is better than nothing I suppose. He's thankfully not on a zero hour, I don't think supermarkets do them, at least mine doesnt and I don't think his does either.

All terms other than the end date carry on.

It is a bit naughty to just assume someone will stay.

Best option in many cases is to ignore the games and just work till one side gives notice.
