Tips, work collections and etc...

Do you usually leave tips at restaurants or tip the delivery man when ordering a take away? Do you contribute to work collections and etc?
Why and why not?

No! Anyone earning the minimum wage has a larger income than my pension so why should I? Not that I can afford takeaways more than a couple of times a year.

I have to admit I used to resent paying out for leaving presents at work for people I had never met.

I tend to tip in restaurants, but only if the service was good. I never have takeaways and wouldn't tip the delivery man. At work I used to make a point of refusing to put money in the collection for people I didn't know or barely knew, also refused if they had not worked there for long.

Work collections can be so uneven. When I was still working I would contribute if I was on friendly terms with the person, but not otherwise.

I could see that things did seem to work out very unevenly. There were those that were deemed universally "popular" and collections would be taken for any and every excuse for them and even for "personal" reasons (such as pregnancy/getting married/etc). On the other hand - others wouldn't have a collection taken even for work reasons (such as promotion, retirement, etc).

Its just not a very fair system imo. I reckon I lost out big-time, as I never had "personal" collections taken for me (courtesy of no pregnancies/marriage/etc) and by the time I retired a lot of staff had left and the "pool" of people to collect from had gone down substantially and my retirement present was worth a lot less than some peoples had been in the past.

Re tips - I've always been poorly-paid and always been single (ie much higher living expenses than most) and I don't disagree with tipping per se but leave it to those who are well-paid and/or married to do so.

I usually leave a small tip (circa 10%) at a restaurant if I have had good food and service but if either the food or the service has been inadequate then I don't leave one. I always pay by card but leave a cash tip for the waiter/waitress.

I have never ordered a take away to be delivered to my home so was not aware that it was etiquette to tip the delivery person.

Re work collections - I always contributed if I knew the person. In a more recent job where I had just started, I did decline when asked to contribute towards leaving gifts of two people who worked in a different building and whom I had never even met. I also declined to take part in the Secret Santa as I had just joined the company at the beginning of December and didn't know the majority of the participants.
