If the employer requires the employee to wear specific clothing/shoes for work, then they should supply them for free. Same with Agency workers needing PPE. It is the Agency's responsibility to supply these, not the worker.Never Knowingly Understood.

One of the grads working for me was telling me she used to work for a clothing retailer and was expected to wear the clothes, she did happily as the company were sensible to offer 80% off retail prices for staff.
This case seems a harsh request.0 -
It can if they are above school leaving age which is dependent on when in the year they were bornI don't think NMW applies to 16 year olds working Saturdays.

Thanks guys for all your advice. I think she should just cut her losses and leave.

I would see this as a positive that they envisage her staying long term. That's why she wasn't made to be anything straight away.
2 things that need to be resolved:-
1) is one pair acceptable as she only works one day a week
2) what staff discount does she get
She may find that the discount is quite hefty for work purchase items. I worked in a clothes shop and I think it was 50% for work items and 30% for non work items. Even although I loathed the clothes I bought the the items I could wear again in the future if I left (mainly black in colour and quite basic) so I wasn't losing out.NOT a NEWBIE!
