thanks folks and getting a grip

Hi

Wanted to say thanks for all the advice of late. I am remortgaging house (not consolidation just my Halifax deal is ending ) for much cheaper deal.

Found out I have been overpaying tax, too:eek: silly fool me - been on BR rate...so owed (this tax and last) nearly 1200 - I know I am THICK as bricks but my pension overpayment I make clouded payslip - tax code was misprinted on my wage slip as 522L but I calculated as it looked wrong, phoned tax office and wages and hey presto they have me down as BR M1 - have to claim last year's myself but this year's will be on September pay! AND I'll be a lot better off each month.

Now to put rest of all your advice into action. Feel SO much better.:T

    No not thick at all.

I used to work in a busy Payroll office for a retail chain and the amount of people who had been on BR for ages and didn't realise.

I used to make it my mission to send out memos every month with the wage slips urging people to check their wage slips and contact us if BR was there.

I got no bigger sense of satisfaction in that job than when I helped people get quite hefty rebates as it wasn't a well paid job for some and I knew that the £800 or so would make a real difference.

So, anyone out there who's not sure - go check your payslip NOW and if the tax code is BR you must contact your payroll office tomorrow! :D

    Hi

cheers all! Lookingahead - oh what a star you are - and yes it makes an amazing difference to let people know they need to check. Mine was misprinted but anyway, BR would, to me, mean basic rate and that means ok unless you 'get' the allowance factor. I wonder how many people are paying too much?

I also have a pension that hasn't had tax relief so I have been paying much more a month more than I should...what a difference it will make!
