Why all this gratuitous hostility against EU citizens lately?

Sorry but you've missed the point. If you are British, it's obvious that they want to see your passport. In Europe we have national identity cards and by both UK and EU law they are equivalent to a passport. It's not that I don't have a valid document, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to cross the border, would I?Edinburgh65 wrote: »I think you should lighten up a bit, in this instance I think you are being a bit paranoid. Lots of employers ask to see applicants' passports, even if they are UK born and bred and caucasian. I had to let my current employer see and record details of mine, and I am British.0 -

You are quite right that, according to the Gov.website, your national identity card is all that is needed to check that you are allowed to work here.
iif you want to take this further have a read of this:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/311665/Code_of_practice_on_avoiding_unlawful_discrimination_while_preventing_illegal_working.pdf
It is clear discrimination.
If you cannot be a*sed to take this further then I would email the company giving them the links to 'how to check an employee's employment status' from the Gov. website and also the above link.
At the very minimum some employee of the company need to be re-educated.0 -
You don't sound like the calmest of people, to be honest. Sounds as though you have a huge chip on your shoulder. All sorts of things make people unappealing for potential employers, maybe the issue isn't the lack of a passport.0

You should be ashamed of yourself by simply posting this presumptuous reply. UK is entitled to claim it back from the EU member if their citizens come and claim benefits. Similarly Spanish authorities are entitled to claim British pensioners' health cost from British government for instance. Probably you don't have an issue with Brits living in other countries though.
Simply some people posting here have no idea how EU works and how many European citizens have been working in the UK, similar to Brits who are working in European countries.
You need to pay around £1200 for naturalisation. People assume British passports are given for free at bus stops I think.
I have been there and felt similar things. I have been more disciplined, qualified than my British counterparts for the most of my working life and I never felt entitled to anything. Don't let anyone coming and lecturing you about where you need to live or what you need to do. You are totally and legally entitled to carry your EU ID card.
It is also always easier to blame others for your own failings and problems. I see that happening a lot nowadays. It is all those foreigners innit.ally.0 -
Well get on with it.ally.0

My understanding is that the penalties for employers, should they be caught employing someone who is not entitled to work here, have become stricter and stricter. So HR departments have reacted by accepting only those documents which they know how to check.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

If the passport is the genuine reason that you are not getting a job then surely you have a number of choices
1) don't get a passport and continue to moan about not getting a job
2) point out to every employer that they are being racist by not just using your ID card - you will educate many hr departments I am sure but they won't hire you due to attitude
3) get the passport. Get a job and once you have stick the passport in a drawer and forget about it.
Sounds a bit like our poster gay_guy who went to the papers about employers being homophobic by not hiring him. He wasn't hired because he insisted on wearing a t-shirt pronouncing that he is gay. The easiest thing would be to wear appropriate clothing to interviews and the job centre and to wear his 'I am gay' t-shirt in leisure time but be insisted that it was his right to wear it and that the employers were homophobic.
End result - no job and seeing homophobia where there was none. If I turned up to an interview in a t -shirt and jeans I wouldn't expect to get the job.I am a Mortgage Adviser

Ah but why let common sense spoil a good rant?0
