Egg sizes!

I was incredibly shocked to discover the LARGE sized FR eggs I bought from Asda this week weigh only 60g each!

I've not weighed eggs for many years, since we last kept chickens, but I'm sure a MEDIUM sized egg back then weighed at least 70g.

Since when did eggs start becoming so small? Yet another example of supermarkets ripping us off

Eggs do lose weight if you've kept them in the fridge.

I never keep eggs in the fridge and these were bought fresh this week. I only weighed them out of curiosity as they appeared to be fairly small for what I would classify as a LARGE egg and compared to those I usually buy from the local farm shop.

I had a 54g egg this week that was a double yoker!

Granted it was from one of my own chickens, but it was one of the biggest eggs i have had from them so far.

I got my own chickens because I didn't like the thought of shop bought eggs being so old before I bought them. They can be anything up to three weeks old

Now I've had to go and try to weigh the eggs from our chickens. We need more accurate scales though.
The bantam eggs were just under 50g and the others were over 75g as the graduations were 25g each not very accurate though.

When you've been used to eating eggs of random sizes you forget what the regular 'shop bought eggs' come up as.

Sometimes someone doesn't lay for a day or two and then we get a HUGE offering :D

Now I have a compulsion to buy scales ....

Oystercatcher I can't imagine NOT weighing my eggs  I think because I'm new to it and they've only just all started laying in the last week and it's all new to me :)

Queen of cheap, Yes ! 'First eggs' are very exciting, it has never occurred to me to weigh them before though. It would be interesting to keep records and note the changes. As well as double yolkers, sometimes we get teeny tiny eggs with no yolk :(

supermarket eggs have no flavour, eggs from you local butcher are cheaper and much tastier/fresher.
I had a couple of fresh eggs tonight from the butcher and they were lovely on a huge plate of bubble - numnum.

M & S eggs are gorgeous, or failing that W&rose, a bit more expensive but if they are for eating as opposed to baking then I would rather pay a bit more for the taste alone..SM eggs are pale and watery by comparison, ok for chucking into baking but I wouldn't like them for breakfast.
