New mortgage and uncleared debt

When we applied for the mortgage they did all the checks and we confirmed all debts would be cleared from the equity in the house,

What form did the confirmation take? i.e. verbal or written.

It was verbal when the broker took all the details on the phone, we also had them come visit us in person to sign all the paperwork so I can only assume it was all confirmed then (can't remember that far back now )
