Received cheque from old mortgage account, don't know why.

Options
I received a cheque from the company I had a mortgage with a few years ago. They say they made a mistake with my first payment and have sent the cheque including 8% extra for compensation. I wonder if this is to prevent me from making a claim for miss selling maybe. I'm a bit puzzled as to why they find this out years later, I have not made a complaint as such. Any ideas?
