How do I clean bloodstains? Not dodgy I promise!

Options
I had a little (hem hem) accident witha lightbulb on monday night, and managed to get blood all over the wallpaper, carpet and wood panel on the stairs. Now I am well enough to tackle the mess properly. The carpet isn't too bad (not up to CSI std but looks ok, thankfully a dark carpent), the wood I have cleaned and that ok - it needed restaining anyway, but the wallpaper looks horrible. Have I just given myself an excuse to redecorate or is it saveable?

    Blood Stains
    • Put a paste of water and cornstarch, cornmeal or talcum powder on fresh spots. Let dry and brush off.
    • Cover fresh or dried stains with meat tenderizer and add cool water. After 15 to 30 minutes, sponge off with cool water.
    • Fresh blood on leather? Dab on a little hydrogen peroxide. After it bubbles, wipe it off.
    • If you get blood on fabric, quickly wet a long piece of white cotton thread with saliva and place it across the spot. The thread will absorb the blood.
Found that which might help. Meat tenderiser of all things, would have never thought of that.

My DS1 has lots of nose bleeds, I usually use bio washing powder mixed with water to clean his mattress, bed frame etc with.

Depends on how washable the wall paper is as to if it'll survive, maybe try on an unseen area first.
One day I might be more organised...........

Hi there, if it is your own blood, the best thing to remove it is your own saliva! in other words spit on it! the enzymes in your saliva help break down the blood!

  • I just use copius amounts of cool water - blood is (obviously) water soluble. The key thing is to not use hot water - this will permenantly fix the "dye". One of the few practical things you learn in a Chemistry degree! Once that iron binds it aint goin nowhere. Actually I forget the detail, maybe a more recent graduate could explain lol!

salt water is good for removing blood stains - not sure if it would work on your carpet though?
