Spending Diary

I've never been able to get into the whole spending diary thing simply because I have a problem putting pen to paper, I'm more someone who likes to do things in a techy way :)

Anyway I was reading a few debt free blogs and came across this site (amazing I've never typed this in yet) http://www.spendingdiary.com which basically does exactly what it says on the tin. You can also produce reports and stuff from it to make things look fancy. Starts off in $ but you can change that to £s and best of all it's totally free.

  • Wow that looks really good! I'm a bit rubbish when it comes to spending diaries - I always get confused where to draw the line with sectioning things down etc and i get myself muddled lol!

  • Hi - just wanted to say thanks for the encouraging words about the site –it’s fairly new so feedback, and ideas to improve the site is very much appreciated :)

I’m trying to build it up to something simple and useful, but not stay away from creating a full on MS Money on the Web type clone!

If you want any more info about the site, or have questions, I’m a regular lurker here and can be contacted through the spendingdiary site.

Just had a look and signed up! Seem slike a good idea, as it saves the need for bits of paper although I suppose it requires discipline, and isn't much good ifyou're away for a few days - but then I suppose you can use the paper then and add it when you're back. Everyone has said on my debt diary that I need a spending diary, so I suppose I've just got one!

Spendingdiary - great that you're here, this could be really useful for some of us! You were looking for feedback: would it be possible to have a drop-down list for the category selection? And perhaps each user could add their own categories to suit their own spending? I can see groceries, eating out, clothes, car parking, and loads of others being typed over and over again! Also, clicked on reports, and got a bizarre graph showing 30, 60, 90 for Region A, Region B??????! You've lost me completely on that one!

Hi pandapaws - thanks for the feedback :)

The category selection should show you a drop-down type list once you've added a couple of entries - hopefully that's now working.

Sorry about the graph - that sounds like a bug :o - it seems to be showing you the default graph the software produces when it can't find any data to show! I'll dig into my code and try and work out what's happening....and once again thanks for the feedback!

No worries, hope that it goes well, it is a great idea. The problem is just being disciplined enough to keep going back...!

hehe - I guess that's very much my problem to make it compelling / useful / worthwhile for people to come back! - I've found it's quite revealing once you've got a couple of weeks data in there to see where it goes  - but perhaps I'm bound to say that! :p

As mentioned suggestions are very much appreciated :) I'm thinking of making a mobile version....but accessing the internet on your phone isn't really DFW!...it's a bit trickey thinking what to add! :p
  • Just a thought on this, maybe add a forum to try and encourage people to keep coming back to the site, if people visit it every day then they will remember to use it.
