  • Hi PlutoinCapricorn

Yes that's what I am hoping it is.

I have moved twice since I was last self employed so it maybe that, who knows...

I would guess it's sorted well done to you
  • Did you complete the Ceased Trading Date on your final return? How do HMRC know your current address?

  • Did you sell anything liable to Capital Gains Tax in recent years? Do you get interest on any bank accounts?

I have run out of ideas, but if you follow their instructions I hope that they will forget the whole thing.

At least it got you to join this website, which is full of useful tips on all kinds of subjects and offers a lot of support.

  • Hi PlutoinCapricorn

Nope don't have anything to sell, and very little savings.

Being on benefits, any money I have does not go far and certainly nothing that generates any interest.

I have been wondering how HMRC knows my current address as I moved here in 2010 but that's all I can say?

On the tax demand letter there is a Employer Reference that is a bunch of numbers and contains the letters ESA. I asked the chap on the phone today about that and he said that it refers to the fact that I am on Employment Support Allowance. He said that they (HMRC) need to have some kind of reference number and this just shows that I receive benefits so who knows?

I will send the letter tomorrow and see what happens.
  • I am being a bit paranoid here, but you need to be sure that the letter gets to the right person, so perhaps you could phone the nice man towards the end of next week - or even use recorded delivery. People on here have reported letters going astray.

People who have received more than £30k in redundancy money may be asked to complete a tax return; HMRC check adverts to catch people who should be registered as self-employed, people selling lots of new stuff on eBay or advertising various services. I don't think that any of this applies to you, so perhaps someone just wanted to hear from you.

The 10th July date stands out to me as not right. Self assessments for 2014-15 have until the autumn/winter to be completed.
  • Hi xHannahx

The 2014 one I have received is for the dates 6 April 2013 to 5 April 2014.

On the letter that came with the Tax Returns it says I have three months from the date of the letter in which to return the S.A. Forms.?
  • Hi PlutoinCapricorn

Nope none of that applies to me?

belinea2010, you're not per chance named as a company director?

Even if you are simply a named Director without any income you would be asked by HMRC to complete a Tax Return.
