Just lost my wife

I don't like to ask at such a hard time. I lost my wife on the 9th April after losing her battle with one of the rarest forms of adult cancer known, Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma. There are only around 50 new cases in the UK per year and then they only affect children. Julie was 1 month away from her 46th birthday.

It really is a bad time for me at the moment trying to deal with Julie's pensions and other legal documents etc. What exactly happens as Julie had 3 different pensions with companies that she worked for. I've had forms that I have had to fill in etc but I don't understand the tax implications of any of them. Do I just fill in the forms and return them and hope that the companies will see fit in doing what is right?

So sorry for your loss. You must be devastated. Dont know a lot about it but didnt want to read and run.

I think filling the forms in and sending them back is the best way forward, see what you get back.

Sorry for your loss I am sure most pension companies are used to dealing with bereaved people maybe give them a call and find out your options.

Thank you both for your comments and concerns. Julie's cancer was 1 in 10 million, she used to say to me that she wished she had a normal cancer as that's where all the money goes. She fought bravely with horrendous side effects to the treatment until her body could not take any more. I set up a 'Justgiving' the day before her funeral, which was last Monday, nd we have raised £600 for sarcoma UK so far.

    Thank you both again, xx

    Condolences on your loss.

I would think that you should complete the forms with the information required by the administrators.

I imagine that you are likely to receive lump sums and a widower's pension - are there any dependent children involved?

You are yourself employed? It may be as well to contact HMRC after you know what difference the income will make to your regular income so as to keep your tax situation straight.

You may find it helpful to consult an IFA when you feel up to it to discuss future plans.

So sorry to hear of the loss of your wife. I also lost my husband in February so I know what you are going through. My husband also had 3 pensions, just fill in the forms and send the documents required, they usually ask for original documents so send them by special delivery. The individual pensions will apply the tax although one of his pensions they have took the longest time are using the emergency tax code but I assume that will be sorted.

    Take care

Just to say how very sad I am for you. I can't help with the pension question but maybe someone like Dunston will come along and have all the answers you need.... Well done on your fundraising, I am sure it will increase in the near future.

    My condolences for your loss.

What type of pensions were they? Was she still working and on sick leave when she fell ill? This will have some implications re death benefits with some pensions.

the DC or money pruchace pensions are fairly easy (although there could be death in service on top if she was working) as they will pay put tax free in a lump sum. DB or finaly salary type are different. Some again will have a death in service payment if still working. Others will have both a widowers pension and dependant children's pension. This would be income, so would have tax implications. But you could pay the income into your current or another pension to take out the tax sting and defer it until later.
