first taste of salmon recipe please

Hi. Well I've made it to my early fifties with never having tried Salmon.
I'm trying to convince myself that I need to eat some (health/diet), but just don't fancy it trying it! Can anyone give me an easy starter recipe to try just a little bit? I don't like strong spices but like herby tastes.
Many thanks

Why not just grill or fry it simply, perhaps serving it with new potatoes and a green veg. That way you'll know whether you like the actual taste of the fish or not?
  • We like it oven baked (wrapped in foil) with just a little salt and pepper and lemon slices on top (or without lemon and just squeeze over to taste when cooked).

If you like stirfrys them I would recommend doing a stir fry chopped up into inch-long bits with veggies, noodles and sauce (supermarket ones are the ones we use normally). I'm not a massive fan of salmon (find it a bit bland) so the stirfry option is nice :)

If you are unsure, try adding a small amount to a fish pie. That way you get the chance to try some but if you’re not keen you haven’t ruined a whole meal. It’s also a good way to incorporate some in your diet without having a whole piece of salmon if you don’t like the flavour all that much.
We also make a variation on fish pie, which we call fish pasta! We make the filling in the usual way with fish and parsley sauce, par boil some pasta for 5 mins, drain and then sir the whole lot together, add a little grated cheese on top if you wish and pop in the oven for 20 mins.
  • Salmon en croute is my suggestion. Pack of puff pastry, boursin (or other) soft cheese and salmon. Spread some cheese on one side of the salmon, wrap in pastry and cook in the oven for about 30 mins at 180 C. I tend to use frozen salmon fillets (don't thaw) and prepare as many parcels as I can with the pastry and then bung them straight back in the freezer.
  • I must admit to preffering mackerel over salmon and mackerel is very high in omega three.

I would suggest steaming the salmon lightly with a splash of lemon juice and pepper and serve with a fresh salad and new potatoes
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I like to panfry salmon in a little oil and butter - do the skinless side first, then when its halfway cooked I turn it, sprinkle on a little salt and pepper and - drizzle with honey! it sounds weird I know, but tastes delish when that honey melts down the fish. I normally serve it with salad (so don't mind if it goes a bit cold), new potatoes and sometimes any veg out of the garden.

1 packet of salmon trimmings mixed with a tub of cream cheese, a little lemon juice and pepper to taste. Mix well (use a hand blender if poss) and serve on toast or in sandwiches. This is one of my favourite sandwich fillings and is really thrifty to make if you use "value" (or equivalent) cheese and salmon bits

We have salmon fillets in the oven as I type, I love it could eat in every day...we just wrap them in baking parchment or foil and cook them for around 20 mins on gas mark 4 ( depends on thickness etc) we serve with new potatoes and whatever veg we have in the fridge and my indulgence hollandaise sauce on the side. We use Maille but you can make your own sauce if you want to...

I had it last week, had sampled it before but it was my first time as a meal. I had it in a bagel with Scrambled egg and cream cheese. Would have enjoyed it better with bacon instead of salmon but like you was trying to eat fish for health reasons. Can't say I liked it but it was ok.

Some confusion here between smoked salmon and salmon fillets.

Smoked salmon doesn't need cooking (already cured) and is quite tasty with a smoky sort of flavour. I love it and it's great in sandwiches or with salad. Aldi do a hot version which you can microwave too.

Salmon fillets (raw fish) that need pan frying or oven cooking are much more bland so need some sort of flavouring IMO even if it's just seasoning.

If it's healthy oils you're after OP, go for a tin of sardines.;)
