Insurance for son who is off travelling for 12 months?

Booked flights last night for son and girlfriend who are off travelling around New Zealand and Australia for approx 12 month
Booked flight for 30th September and looking for insurance for them both
Do i need to cover insurance from todays date or from the actual date?
Any cheapish recommendations please?

You need to arrange a policy with a start date of 30th Sept, however the cancellation parts of the policy will not apply until you arrange the policy so the sooner you take out and pay for the policy the sooner the cancellation cover will start.0

You'll need backpacker type insurance, try Endsleigh and STA to start with as they are big in this market.0
