HSBC won't close my account...

Options
Hey guys, been a good while since I was last here.

So I managed to pay off that behemoth 4 grand I owed HSBC, largely due to their incompetence. Big hurrays!

I paid it off, and called them to close my account with them on the 2nd of December and felt as free as the wind blows. Why they make you call another number to close, I don't know.

As it turns out, they didn't close my account, they just stopped sending me mail. A pending direct debit, that they screwed up in the first place and caused this whole mess, came out (even though it had already come out of my new account).

So this direct debit came out, and started adding up fees and interest, until now. I sorted the whole mess out with them, and my account now reads £0.00.

I asked them to close my account, and they said they couldn't. I said, can I have the number you gave me last time, they said... what number?

They say that I need to visit a branch (23 miles away) to close my account in person.

I asked why can't they do it like last time? They said there is no option to close by phone. (there bloody well is, I closed my others with them!)

After lots of to-ing and fro-ing I just thought I'd get them to freeze my account to stop any other unwanted **** ups by them.

"I'm sorry Sir, but there is no option to, what is this? Freeze? the account"

There is, I've done it before.

Are they just playing with me? Are they fishing and wanting to put more charges on my account?

I've had 13 years of incompetence by these useless ****s and I've been drowning in debt the last 5 because of them, nothing would surprise me.

Does anyone have this number that they ask you to call to cancel? Or do I really have to drive all the way to a branch, THEN wait 5 more days for more possible charges, and they might not even close it then!?

My god I'm angry right now!

    Hi,

Take it this is a bank account yes ? just cancel all DD's etc etc, and don't use it again, put in a letter to them cancelling in writing, that is a legally recognised method which they cannot refuse.

    That should be sufficient.

Given that the call didn't work last time I wouldn't actually use that method again. I would either close in branch (and ask for written confirmation) or write to them to close the account.

If there any any charges due to be applied to the account then they won't let you close it until those are applied and paid anyway.
