Where I worked, the computers could send items to print to the copiers. What's intrinsically wrong about an IT techie ensuring the photocopiers are in good working order?0

Variants on the content quoted in the OP are pretty much standard. Terms like "...and other such work as may be deemed necessary..." covers the employer and prevents a bolshie employee saying "It's not in my job description".
All jobs change over time and may require new responsibilities to be taken on and/or passed on to other people. As I said, standard stuff.0 -
I can thank my ability to be flexible and pick up additional or separate tasks to my JD for getting me where I am in my career today. Being able to show off different skills hasn't been a bad thing for me at all, so not sue why the concern.
It wasn't in my JD to drive to Munich have a meeting and drive back but due to the ash cloud thats exactly what I did, my boss couldn't go as he wasn't allowed to drive in france for a while
, so I went and got him out of a tricky situation, that deviation from my role landed me promotion 3 months later. 0 -
If you are the Manager and given another job to do, then delegate it on.It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0

That is all good and well but my responsibilities would never be shuffled to someone else because of the fact that it a technical position, they would never say pass some of my responsibilities to say the Reprographics assistant in exchange for some of theirs so it is surely unfair to do that isn't it?
I am not a "this isn't my job" type of person believe me I am an extremely flexible worker but there is a difference sometimes between being flexible and someone taking advantage.
I know these things always seem very significant if you're the person involved, but from an outside perspective I think it sounds a bit petty. Can it be summed up as "It's not fair! They're supposed to do the photocopiers, not me!"? If so, best to just get on with it.0 -
Like I said I am only giving one example here there are others. I am glad to be a flexible employee but I have to draw the line somewhere it may seem petty but I cannot get away with palming off some of my responsibilities and to be honest other staff that work in the organisation couldnt do any of my job anyway. I just think on principle this flexibility thing seems to be a one way street others can seemingly say no or dont get asked but i have to do it how can that ever be seen as fair?? Did I mention that these tasks are the duty of other staff and it says so in their JDs? if its a competency or time thing thats not my problem i dont have the resources to do additonal tasks and that is main issue.0

It seems that the point is being missed, I understand that employees have to be flexible I understand that responsibilities may change over time. What I dont understand is why you would assign someone elses work to me when they are sat over the other side of the office with one less thing to do and are still getting paid for now not doing a % of what they were employed to do? That does not seem logical to me unless a) they are struggling for time or b) they arent competent.0

How your bosses run the business is up to them.
If you really want to understand how thing are run and where you fit in you need to get this trivial nonsense out of your head and look at and become part of the bigger picture.
You have no idea about the true capabilities of every one in the business and anyone that think they do stuff no one else can needs a reality check.
Is this your first job?0 -
This is not my first job and when I say no one else could do my job I mean no one else currently employed in the business and that is fact it isnt me trying to be big headed.0

Management must think that you have both the ability and capacity in your working day to take on the extra responsibilities. You can't know what plans they may have for the person who is having part of their workload passed to you.
Also do you really think you know the full capabilities of every other member of staff? Somebody may currently be doing x, y or z, that doesn't mean they don't have other experience from previous employment.0
