Well tomorrow marks the 100th Anniversary of ANZAC day so I thought I'd do a quick quiz, based on a Podcast I heard today. Three questions. The questions regard all people across the world, not just rich people or European people. Everyone from Melbourne to Mogadishu to Manchester.
1. What proportion of kids are vaccinated against measles roughly?
a. About a fifth
b. Roughly half
c. Over four fifths
2. What proportion of the population live in absolute poverty compared to 20 years ago?
a. About double
b. About the same
c. About half
3. How many children are there in the world compared to 20 years ago?
a. About double
b. About the same
c. About half
Have fun!

By coincidence I have just listened to your 'ignorance test' and sadly I am riddled with the stuff - I got 1 out of 3.
'Fess up Gen - how'd you do?0 -

I knew the answer to question 3 already or at least knew roughly where it was. We have a radio station here (ABC National) which mostly plays programs from various equivalents of the World Service from all over. The German version had a great program on population last year. It was fascinating to the extent that I sat in the car in a car park for a few minutes to hear the end.
Q2 I guessed correctly. I'll explain why later so as not to spoil things. It's obvious when you think about it.
Q1 I didn't have a clue about. Living in Aus I've come to realise that even in an extremely rich country there are parts that are incredibly isolated. Trying to get your kids vaccinated in much of rural Africa or Asia must be a bloody nightmare. Then again I remember my old Blue Peter programs of nurses on bicycles in the jungle or some such. I didn't even try to guess and TBH any of the three answers would have struck me as reasonable.0 -
Yep q2 was my moment of brilliance. The vaccination one I was convinced I would be right but couldn't have got it more wrong.0

It's a tough question.
Rich people can afford to vaccinate their kids but sometimes choose not to because they don't see the consequences routinely of living around unvaccinated people.
Poor people (properly poor people) are desperate to have their kids vaccinated but don't have the money to get to a doctor to have it done.
Charities aim to fill the gap.
So what's the outcome people???0 -
...1. What proportion of kids are vaccinated against measles roughly?
c. Over four fifths
Gotta be more than anyone thinks.... 2. What proportion of the population live in absolute poverty compared to 20 years ago?
c. About half...
I know that China's taken over 600 million people out of absolute poverty since they discovered capitalism. That's a lot of people...3. How many children are there in the world compared to 20 years ago?
b. About the same0 -
1 - (A) can't be true since I know for a fact that it's very widespread in, at a minimum, the US, all of Europe, china. even quite poor countries do it. That adds up to more than 20% of kids. I'm going to stick my neck out and say (C). though (B) is perhaps equally plausible.
2 - seriously, no idea. there's been a reduction of poverty in many poor countries but also poorer countries have no doubt had much higher birth rates on average. i'll guess that the two effects outweigh each other & that the answer is (B).
3 - I can't begin to guess. I'll go with doubling, (A). my best guess would be an increase that's slightly smaller than that but faced with a choice between doubling or no change I'll go with doubling.FACT.0 -
Good answers from the board's favourite porcine.
When you think about populations, think about the timescale that can impact on them.
E.g. If I decided to encourage families to have more kids then the impact of that policy would be nil for at least 9 months.0 -

On the basis that I can't believe that the number of children in the world has either doubled or halved, so it has to be the least wrong answer.
I expected better from you - normally I can rely on you to google it so I don't have to. Educated guesses are just not in your nature!0 -

I chose the questions becuase they are tough to Google. I'll explain why later as they are very simple facts on the face of it.0 -
1 i'd go with a, to be honest i am surprised it's even that high, but that's the lowest option
2, i'll go with b, as although an awful lot of people's living standards will have gone up over that time, the population has also boomed, so i suspect it balances out.
3 i'll go with A, we've added over a billion people in 20 years, probably 2, only a small % of that can be that old people have forgotten it's their time to die, and it's about total not proportion, so it's got to have gone up, and this is the only option with an increase0
