To propose, ring is not required. As she already know about your debts, she will understand it. I would say, if you really want to give her a ring, give it once you pay down your debts.
My fiance proposed to me without a ring. We later on, went out together to a diamond wholesale jewelry store (Phera Diamonds, Vancouver) and bought a pair of thin, classic plain platinum band. It costed us only what we could afford.

    You don't need a ring.

If you love each other and are prepared to enter into this commitment then a piece of jewellery is irrelevant. It's just something for show.

For a few hundred quid, I'd much rather have a fridge, dishwasher, or even a weekend away somewhere nice.

And if you're already in debt, then a ring is just an everlasting symbol of even more money you have to pay back.

Good luck! Don't waste your money on a piece of bling to show off.:)
