Cats and dogs

I'm looking for a long lasting way to discourage cats and dogs from doing their business on my greenery. I have thought about the double barrel but thats a bit messy ( kidding) I have 2 problems. First of all cats. As my property is well enough fenced off dogs cant get in but cats as you know will go anywhere, and of all the places they could drop their load it always appears to be my lawn. Someone suggested pepper dust but surely first splash of rain will get rid of it. So any other humane long lasting ways to discourage cats?
Now dogs. As I said they cant access my property but on the outside of my hedge there is a strip of grass. This is the first piece of grass on the footpath coming out of 2 separate estates, therefore its the owners first chance to let their dogs do the needful. So whenever I go out to cut the hedge or tidy up there is an unbelievable amount of the brown stuff. Quite stomach churning. so any good ideas?

Spread coffee grounds on the soil. Cats hate the smell. It also discourages slugs, win win!

My parents in law had a few fun sunny days in the garden with water pistols - humane but it definitely put the cats off lol. Probably only works if you have time on your hands and a love of water pistols though...
