Senior Rail Card or Two Together Card?

Hi!
My daughter has moved to Kettering and me and the missus will be traveling up there from Croydon quite a bit.
I am over 60, missus is a youngster in her 50s. Which card will be the best to get the cheapest fares?

    2 together.
  • It depends on whether all your train journeys will be made together. If you make most journeys alone then the senior railcard is likely to be better. If all of your journeys are made as a couple then 2 together.

Don't forget about journeys made outside of the Croydon-Kettering one too.
    It's only numbers.

Two Together is great, assuming you'll both be travelling. It costs £30 and gives 1/3 off for a year - OH and I got one and made the money back in our first return journey!

Try doing a dummy booking on the National Rail website and you'll see the savings.

For example, if you were going to visit for for the weekend, say Friday to Sunday, I found an off-peak return for £73pp - £146 total (East Croydon to Kettering). Using Two Together Railcard the price is £96.40 for both people - £126.40 including the buying the railcard - so that's almost £20 off. Do that journey twice and you've more than made your money back.

(Of course there may be cheaper advance fares available, and you can 1/3 off them too!)

Senior Railcard is also £30, also saves 1/3 - though you can can get a three year one for £70.

You just need to work out how often you'll be travelling together to see which is better for you.

P.S. It's actually not against the rules to have more than one railcard - but you can only use one per transaction.
  • Thanks for all the helpful replies. Have bought the 2 together card.

Note the Two Together Railcard is more restrictive than the Senior Railcard, as it is not valid at all until 0930.

Providing all travel is at or after 0930, and providing you can be certain both passengers will be able to travel together, this is the best Railcard to get.
