Stirling Park, confused and worried

Options
They claim I owe £50 debt which I do not think I owe, I contacted council responsible who said they would look into it and keep forgetting or claiming no record on system.

Stirling Park pestered me to pay a £10 token amound and I told them I will be in town near one of their offices on payday and may be able to pay or at least go into offices(never said I would actually pay just I may go into offices) Heard back today when they say pay at least £10 by tomorrow or they will add a £70 fine onto it!

The main shock there is how can they add a £70 fine onto a £50 alleged debt! I do not want to pay this £10 token amount because that means they can claim I accepted the debt, and also they charge a 50p fee for each payment(that they do not mention)

Whate are my rights?

Council tax, the only proof they have given me is that they say its for a certain period and I know I lived there at the time but CT was paid but all they say is that I have to prove I dont owe it, the normal excuse.

I find it shocking even if I owe the debt they want a fine of more than the actual debt itself.

    Absolute rubbish they are talking.

It is not up to you to prove you dont owe it, it's up to them to prove you do.

Write to the morons stating the above, and demand proof of this debt.

  • Isn't the onus on them to prove you are the debtor? Can you send them the 'prove it' letter? It's on the sticky link to important threads on this board.

How long have they been chasing you for?

Have they visited you at home yet? or just written to you? have they given you written notice of a date they intend to visit?

Did they show you a copy of the liability order for the debt?

Are you in England/Wales? if so then this is worth a read - https://www.nationaldebtline.org/EW/factsheets/Pages/02%20EW%20Council%20tax%20recovery/Default.aspx
