It's always second hand for us, never had a problem.
Currently waiting on a new mattress being delivered but i have bought second hand ones from good friends.

    Regards

We've never had any problem, despite having secondhand furniture & rugs in & out of the place constantly. However, when one of my son's flatmates inadvertently brought bedbugs back from a trip to the States (musicians!) they got rid of them by steaming his mattress & bed frame twice a day for a week. So you don't necessarily need to use chemicals, if you do have any kind of problem.

A few years ago I moved and basically had no furniture at all.

I was fairly lucky - finances meant I could get a new mattress. I got most of my other furniture from the BHF charity shop....including a sofa and an upholstered rocking chair.....all in good condition (obviously second-hand but with a good few years use left in them)

When I moved again a couple of years ago, I took the rocker with me.....there was no room for the sofa in my new place, so I contacted the BHF and they collected it and put it back in the store for someone else to buy!....so they have lasted really well....and never even a suggestion of any infestation!

Thanks - I've decided to go for a new bed probably, and a second hand sofa. BHF do have a good one, and they apparently professional clean theirs, so I'll probably get a sofa from the BHF.

Cleaning wont get rid of fleas, mites or bedbugs. I would invest in something like 'Acclaim' and spray it myself. costs about £13 from Pets at Home.
