Potential problem with debt collectors

Not a problem yet, but can see it looming. Really want to know if this has happened to anyone else. Years ago, around 2008, I was made bankrupt. Discharged 2009. Also defaulted on mortgage with GE Money. To cut a long story short, a Housing Association was eventually persuaded to buy my house, under the then Mortgage Rescue Scheme, and rent it back to me. There was an outstanding amount owing to GE. They agreed instalments, which I was paying, but they then transferred the debt to DLC. Continued instalments with them. DLC kept offering 'discounts' to settle the debt. When they offered something I could afford, I paid. I have a letter from them, dated 2013, saying the debt is paid. Now, in 2015, out of the blue, I have a demand from DMS, for the same debt. (It seems to be the original amount, less what I paid to DLC.) I have no intention of paying it. Is this an error, or are GE trying it on? Just wondering how seriously I need to take this. BTW, I still have a bad credit rating because of GE.

Sounds like DLC have sold the debt on. From what you have described DLC bought the debt from GE and have now sold it on to DMS.
Alternatively DLC returned the file to GE without telling them a full and final was agreed and paid and GE sold to another DCA believing a debt was still outstanding.
As long as you have the paperwork confirming Full and final provide photo copies to DMS and that should close the matter.0 -
I'd write a letter of complaint to GE and ask them for full details of exactly who they sold it to and when and if the debt was returned or resold on etc and whether they have any record that it was paid off etc. Provide them with a photocopy of your confirmation.
It does sound like a mistake.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0
