I registered as a sole-trader, under the car cleaning company name, which started on the 1st March 2011.I did think about calling HMRC and seeing what they said, but
1. I didn't imagine them taking to me as a 'John Doe', but rather requesting my identity and thus potentially dropping me in immediate hot water, and..
2. I thought I'd seek advice from here first just so that I have some sort of idea of what to expect, going forward.
The thing is, you've already registered for self employment with HMRC and then you haven't submitted any tax returns so I don't see that getting in touch with them is what's going to get you in hot water. Their records will already show that these returns are outstanding; they have likely sent you many letters to your old address about it. You are right to want to face it and deal with it, and the sooner the better. The outstanding tax returns need to be completed and sent in as soon as possible to be reviewed.0
