4kw system quote for £9k - too expensive?

Options
Hi all, new to forum, just started to look into getting solar installed, just spent 2hours with a sales rep who has quoted me £9k for a 4kw system, this includes a £1500 discount for allowing them to monitor the system remotely.

They also tried to say my wife had to be in the room as well but as she was dealing with my 5 yard old I told her that was a no no!

I won't say the company name but it's a national company (some of you may be able to guess) seems expensive to me & I'm going to get 2 other quotes from more local companies. I'm in the West Midlands and have seen some good reviews about Go Green Systems based out of Telford - has anyone used them or had any contact etc, desperate not too waste another 4 hours of my life getting another 2 quotes.

My roof is west facing with a 35degree pitch.

Others with more knowledge and experience than I will pass comment on your quote but running and miles come to mind.

You could also look at Yougen.co.uk for reviews of installers.

When I got my quotes, the firms turned up, gave some explanations, took some measurements and asked me if I had any questions. They went away and mailed me the quote. One or two followed that up with a call to see if I needed anything else to make my decision and that was that.

    None of this pressure-selling nonsense.

You must be able to find a better firm. Eco2solar did mine and they are not that far from you in Kidderminster.

No wonder they asked for your wife to be there, they wanted to be sure there would be no claims for sexual impropriety as they were having your pants down with that quote!!

Ridiculous price, and it worries me that companies still try and fleece people with stupid claims (I'll bet they said you'll save 50% energy usage) and even more stupid prices.

Stop getting quotes, read the Solar PV faq on here so you get a better feel for what you actually want/can have, then go back it to the market, better informed and a little wiser.
4kWp, SSE, SolarEdge P300 optimisers & SE3500 Inverter, in occasionally sunny Corby, Northants.
Now with added Sunsynk 5kw hybrid ecco inverter & 15kWh Fogstar batteries. Oh Octopus Energy too.

If your roof is only due west-facing then you are going to get fairly disappointing output, as you'll get little direct light before mid-day. South west or south east would be OK.

My roof is 20 degrees south of west-facing and I agree that production is pants until the sun strikes the panels just before midday (that's why I installed my smaller system 9 months after the larger one and exceeded 4kWp) but then you get more generation into the later evening. My WSW system is 3.5kWp and my annual generation between 2,800 and 3,000kWh depending on the weather. Still worthwhile in my view.

If you have a west-facing roof I assume you have one facing east as well. What about smaller roofs in other directions? You could max out on your entire roof space, going beyond 3.628kWp. If you do that, consider going BenQ or SunPower panels to totally max out the power as they are 330W per panel compared to 250W normal ones. The FiT drops by about 10% and you need approval to go beyond 3.628kWp but you'll need to do the maths - max kWp v cost v lower FiT rate but more kWp and so on.

I wish I had realised this before I signed for my larger system. I could have gone for just under 7.6kWp rather than my 5.25kWp on the same roof space. It would all have been at the lower FiT but one install and one inverter etc would have been offset against the more expensive panels.
